Design of the UltraSPARC Instruction Fetch Unit

چکیده

Designing a modern microprocessor is a complex task that demands careful balance between cycle time, cycles-per-instruction, and area costs. In particular, the instruction fetch unit greatly affects the performance of a multi-issue processor. It must provide adequate bandwidth to sustain peak instruction issue rate, and must predict future instruction sequences with high accuracy. In the UltraSPARC prefetch and dispatch unit design, we examined a technique that combined two prediction methods: predictive set-associative cache and in-cache prediction. This combination was compared with alternative designs such as direct-mapped and set-associative caches, and a branch history table and a branch target buffer. We chose the combined prediction technique for its fast cycle time, lower cycles-perinstruction, and lower area costs. This paper summarizes the trade-off decisions made in the design of the UltraSPARC instruction prefetch and dispatch unit. email address: [email protected] © Copyright 1996 Sun Microsystems, Inc. Efficient Cycle-Accurate Simulation of the Ultrasparc III CPU

This paper presents a novel technique for cycleaccurate simulation of the Central Processing Unit (CPU) of a modern superscalar processor, the UltraSPARC III Cu processor. The technique is based on adding a module to an existing fetch-decode-execute style of CPU simulator, rather than the traditional method of fully modelling the CPU microarchitecture. It is also suitable for accurate SMP model...

Effect of Instruction Fetch and Memory Scheduling on GPU Performance

GPUs are massively multithreaded architectures designed to exploit data level parallelism in applications. Instruction fetch and memory system are two key components in the design of a GPU. In this paper we study the effect of fetch policy and memory system on the performance of a GPU kernel. We vary the fetch and memory scheduling policies and analyze the performance of GPU kernels. As part of...

THIC and OpenSPARC: Reducing Instruction Fetch Power in a Multithreading Processor

The OpenSPARC T1 is a multithreading processor developed and open sourced by Sun Microsystems (now Oracle) [1]. We have added an implementation of our low-power Tagless-Hit Instruction Cache (TH-IC) [2] to the T1, after adapting it to the multithreading architecture found in that processor. The TH-IC eliminates the need for many instruction cache and ITLB accesses, by guaranteeing that accesses...

Energy-Effective Instruction Fetch Unit for Wide Issue Processors

Continuing advances in semiconductor technology and demand for higher performance will lead to more powerful, superpipelined and wider issue processors. Instruction caches in such processors will consume a significant fraction of the on-chip energy due to very wide fetch on each cycle. This paper proposes a new energy-effective design of the fetch unit that exploits the fact that not all instru...
